First, the majority of our participants came to Canada most recently (Figure IV.1) and primarily as refugees or through the live in caregiver program (Figure IV.2). Over one half are currently Canadian citizens and around a third of them are permanent residents (Figure IV.3). Less than nine percent are in Canada on a work permit. It is for these reasons that the term immigrant care worker is more appropriate than migrant care worker in the Canadian context.
