A Comparison of Source Country and Destination Country Perspectives

The purpose of this conference was to bring together health policy researchers and decision-makers who have an interest in the migration of health professionals from either a destination country (e.g., Canada, U.S., & U.K.) or a source country (e.g., South Africa, the Philippines, India, the Caribbean & Poland) perspective to develop an explicitly comparative and context sensitive program of research.

Health professionals have long been nationally and internationally mobile but this has increased both in terms of speed and intensity in response to a range of social, economic and political forces. Concerns about the migration of health professionals from low and middle (i.e., ‘source’) to high income (i.e., ‘destination’) countries in particular have become a more prominent and controversial feature of health sector analysis given the staff and skill shortages in the health systems of many “source” countries.
